AERB e-LORA: the complete licensing & renewal guide

Everything an Indian diagnostic centre, hospital or dental clinic needs to register, license and renew radiation-emitting equipment on the AERB e-LORA portal.

What is AERB e-LORA?

The Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) regulates the safe use of ionising radiation in India. e-LORA — electronic Licensing of Radiation Applications — is its online portal for institution registration, equipment licensing, Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) approvals and renewals. Every medical X-ray, CT, mammography, C-arm, dental and veterinary X-ray installation must be registered here before it can be legally operated.

Who needs to register

  • Hospitals and nursing homes with X-ray, CT or mammography units
  • Standalone diagnostic and imaging centres
  • Dental clinics with intraoral, OPG or CBCT equipment
  • Veterinary practices using radiographic equipment
  • Mobile imaging service providers

Step-by-step e-LORA workflow

  1. Create an institution account on elora.aerb.gov.in using the institution's PAN and a working email.
  2. Nominate a Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) with the required qualification level (RSO Level-1 for diagnostic radiology).
  3. Submit room layout with lead shielding calculations for AERB layout approval.
  4. Register each equipment unit with model, serial number, Type Approval certificate and supplier invoice.
  5. Upload Quality Assurance test report from an AERB-recognised QA agency before commissioning.
  6. Receive the licence — typically valid for five years — and display it at the facility.
  7. Renew before expiry with a fresh QA report and current RSO consent.

Documents checklist

  • Institution PAN and address proof
  • Equipment invoice and Type Approval certificate
  • RSO qualification certificates and consent letter
  • Room layout drawing with shielding details
  • QA test report from an AERB-recognised agency
  • Previous licence copy (for renewals)

Renewal timeline

Start the renewal at least 90 days before expiry. QA testing alone can take 3–4 weeks, and AERB review another 4–8 weeks. Operating with a lapsed licence is a violation of the Atomic Energy (Radiation Protection) Rules, 2004. MyCompliance automates 90, 60, 30, 20, 15 and 10-day reminders so renewals never slip.

Frequently asked questions

What is AERB e-LORA?

e-LORA (electronic Licensing of Radiation Applications) is the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board's online portal for registration, licensing and renewals of radiation-emitting equipment such as X-ray, CT, mammography and dental units in India.

Who must register on AERB e-LORA?

Any institution operating medical diagnostic X-ray equipment — including hospitals, diagnostic centres, dental clinics, standalone radiology units and veterinary practices — must register the institution and each equipment unit on e-LORA before use.

What are the key AERB licences for a diagnostic centre?

Institution registration, Equipment registration/licence for each X-ray or CT unit, Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) approval, Layout approval for the X-ray room, and a Decommissioning approval when equipment is retired.

How often must AERB licences be renewed?

Equipment licences are typically issued for five years and must be renewed before expiry. Institution registration remains active as long as the institution operates licensed equipment, but all changes (address, RSO, equipment) must be updated promptly.

What documents are needed for e-LORA registration?

PAN of the institution, address proof, equipment invoice and Type Approval certificate, RSO qualification certificates, room layout drawing with lead shielding details, and Quality Assurance test reports from an AERB-recognised agency.

What happens if an AERB licence expires?

Operating radiation equipment without a valid licence is a violation of the Atomic Energy Act and Atomic Energy (Radiation Protection) Rules, 2004 — attracting penalties, suspension and possible seizure of equipment. MyCompliance sends 90/60/30/20/15/10-day renewal reminders to prevent this.
